Challenge Summary
Iron Ore fines contains ~ 8-10% moisture content which results in high cost of production in processing as it consumes more fuel in Iron making. Also transporting such high moisture cargo results in increased effective logistic cost.
Challenge Scenario
Iron Ore contains high moisture levels especially where mining happens below the water table and where the ROM is beneficiated into high grade concentrate with usage of water. When the iron ore with high moisture content is used in iron and steel making, steel makers need to use more fuel to remove the excess water in the form of moisture in iron ore which affects the efficiency of operation compared to the iron ore which has less moisture content. We are looking at innovative non thermal drying technology through which moisture can be removed, without use of heat which is produced through burning of fuels.
