Challenge Summary

The electricity generation from Renewable Energy (RE) has huge fluctuations resulting in wastage of electricity & increased operational costs to the company. There is a need for a system that can store electricity and stabilize the electricity flow.

Challenge Scenario

Vedanta is using RE majorly from solar sources. When there is an increase in the RE electricity generation from schedule, the electricity schedule from thermal power plant is let out and is wasted. Whereas when there is a drop in the RE electricity generation from schedule, Vedanta buys electricity from the Government grids to compensate for the gap. The electricity requirement is also highly dependent on the sudden changes in the demand schedules.

Hence Vedanta is looking to store the electricity when the generation is in excess and utilize the stored electricity when there is a drop in the generation and stabilize the power supply. For pilot implementation, a solution that can store 2MWH of electricity is preferred.

Coal Oven Team

Technical team: A 15-20 member team, consisting of Electrical Engineering & Diploma graduates will be working at this part of the mine.

Solution Requirements

Store and use electricity according to the 15 minute block schedule

Monitor the demand

Autonomously switch between charging and discharging without any manual intervention

Capable of storing of minimum 2 MWH of electricity for pilot deployment & 200 MWH of electricity for full-scale deployments

An intelligent battery management system that is capable of switching between charging and discharging instantly (within milliseconds)

Integration: The solution should be easily integrable into the existing systems.
